There are two types of taxis available in Sheffield: Hackney Carriages (also referred to as ‘black cabs’) and Private hire vehicles. Black cabs can be hailed in the street or found on the street taxi ranks at many locations throughout the city. Cab fares are fixed by the Sheffield City council and the cost of your journey in black cabs is shown on a meter in the front of the vehicle. Private hire vehicles must be pre-booked for any journey and the booking must be made with a recognised and licensed company. Private hire vehicle fares are set by the private hire operator they receive bookings from.
